After the audience with his advisers was over, the King, accompanied by a few members of his retinue, would go for a short car ride around the outskirts of the city until sundown. His Majesty loved driving, and it had the advantage that he was able to show himself daily to his people.
An hour and a half after sunset the King would pray again. Afterwards he would hold another majlis, this time an informal one, which was an open house for all the dignitaries and high officials in the city and for any prominent visitors. The first half-hour of the majlis was taken up with the reading of religious history or traditional stories about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The floor was then open for anybody who wished to raise a topic for general comment or discussion. As the night wore on and the guests departed one by one, His Majesty would finally leave the majlis himself and make a tour of the Court. He usually ended up in the political section, where his advisers would often be waiting to discuss some matter of importance. Finally, before retiring, he would pay a last visit to the Court offices, to see if anything there required his personal attention.
