The outbreak of the Second World War brought with it great economic difficulties for Ibn Saud. Not only did the dreams of riches from oil wealth fade, as the long voyage from the Kingdom to the West became too dangerous to navigate, but the pilgrim traffic to the Holy Places declined dramatically. The merchants of the Hijaz were threatened with financial ruin, and the Kingdom's reserves dwindled.
