Charles R. Crane, the American philanthropist, was invited to meet Ibn Saud in Jeddah. In the course of his visit, Crane undertook to supply a qualified engineer to carry out a preliminary survey of the water and mineral resources that lay within Ibn Saud's Kingdom.
