Sir Gilbert Clayton, the British emissary and former head of the Arab Bureau, signed the treaty of Jeddah with Ibn Saud. This treaty formally recognized Ibn Saud's independence and sovereignty within the new frontiers of the Kingdom of the Nejd and Hijaz, and established full diplomatic relations between Britain and the new Kingdom.
