The leading citizens of Jeddah (some 140 of them), meeting under the leadership of Hajji Abdullah Alireza, realized that there would be no hope of compromise with Ibn Saud while Husain bin Ali remained as Shareef of Makkah. They decided that the Shareef must abdicate in favor of his son, Ali, who was nominated to carry news of the decision to his father.
