The first Governor of Abha appointed by Ibn Saud proved unpopular, so unpopular that there was a rebellion and, encouraged by alienated tribesmen, Hassan Al-Aidh was prevailed upon to lead a revolt against Saudi rule. He lay siege to Abha and, despite determined resistance, the town fell.
Ibn Saud's response was decisive. He despatched his son, Prince Faisal, at the head of a strong force. It was clear that Ibn Saud had no intention of letting the rebellion stand and, with Prince Faisal's arrival, resistance collapsed. Prince Faisal's choice of Governor proved popular and the province of Asir prospered under Saudi governance, with Asiri citizens given the freedom to establish businesses anywhere in the lands ruled by Ibn Saud, a freedom which they exercised to the full.
Prince Faisal became particularly fond of the region of Asir, developing a good relationship with the people of the region who repaid his interest with devotion and loyalty.
