Ibn Saud determined to extend his authority northwards. To the north west of Riyadh, in the region of al-Qassim, lay the twin cities of Unaizah and Buraidah. Ibn Saud despatched a force to Unaizah. With the redoubtable Abdullah bin Jelawi in the van, the forces of Ibn Saud attacked and, after a day-long bloody battle, the Saudi forces were victorious. Unaizah came under the control of Ibn Saud.
